Ancestral Lines

  Explanatory Notes:
There are a number of frustrations in tracing ancestral lines:
• Lack of, or brevity of records.
• Various spellings, misspellings, variations through either illiteracy of the proponents, or of the record keepers or just inefficient or poor keeping of records.
• Records having been destroyed either over time (mould/mildew etc.) or through destruction during the persecution following Culloden (family bibles, church records etc) destroyed by fire when houses torched.
• The tyranny of distance - being removed from the physical records by many thousands of kilometres. Although the many internet resources now available can make up for this separation (but at a cost).
• Scottish naming traditions causing the same names to be used over and over and at times are co-existent. e.g.
The Scots often named children by following a simple set of rules:
1st son named after father's father
2nd son named after mother's father
   3rd son named after father
1st daughter named after mother's mother
2nd daughter named after father's mother
   3rd daughter named after mother

This application of naming conventions and the general desire to ensure that a family forename is perpetuated through the generations, sometimes led to the duplication of forenames within a family. For example, where a family wished to adhere strictly to the traditional naming pattern, and both grandfathers bore the same forename, that name might be given to more than one child of the family. [This sort of problem can be seen in a previous chapter when looking at the occupants of Auchnerran - multiple Helens, James etc.] If a child died young, parents might name a later child after the dead sibling. In unfortunate cases, the same name may have been used multiple times.

Although this was not universally applied (some families adhered strictly, others “dabbled” while still others ignored it), it can still be helpful at times in determining the correct entry when confronting the relative lack of information contained in the Old Parish Records. It can also give rise to great confusion when eight children of the same family in a small parish name their offspring according to the convention! The use of traditional naming patterns gradually declined during the 19th century.

Given these problems the following is accurate and can be reasonably relied upon.
(Explanatory Note on individual numbering:
G = Generation (with Gregor McGregor as the base line).
A/B or C = Direct Descendant/Spouse of Direct Descendant.

The following history was published on the FAMILY SEARCH website (associated with the IGI - Church of the Latter-day Saints) and was accessed on 5th January 2023.

The details are extremely close to the established family history that was handed down to me by my aunt Marion (Lloyd) McGregor and other members of my immediate family, but with some significant differences going back to the 1700's & 1800's as well as ancestors going well back in time.

With the passing of Marion McGregor and others of her generation, I cannot now interrogate the variances between the established version that I grew up with and this newly found family history tree.

Possible reasons for variations are that at the time of Marion's initial research she would have corresponded in writing with various persons, within Australia and overseas, and the provenance of such information she received could now be held to question. Marion's own memories could have been false, although my recollection of her as a diligent and scrupulous schoolteacher and her being able to have learned the family history directly from her parents would count against this. Notwithstanding, errors (innocent or otherwise) and misinterpretations are constant companions to the amateur genealogist.

The veracity of this new Family Tree published on FAMILY SEARCH website may also contain falsities and erroneous information and connections. At the time of writing, I have not been able to fully examine the source materials or the originator of this tree and the validity of the information and connections. As a general comment, the IGI records, are collected directly from original source material (namely Parish Registers, Marriage Records, Census Records, Births and Baptism Records etc.) and these are notorious for misspellings, illegible handwriting, inaccuracies as well as transcription errors and the (sometimes) tenuous connections between similarly named individuals.

This having been stated, I am inclined to give considerable credence to the new history (wishful thinking on my part?) as it fills in some gaps that I thought were mysterious and unexplained. One example of this in the established history, is that Gregor McGregor and Margaret Cattanach were married on 10 July 1779 but did not produce a child (John) until nine years later in 1788. This could have been due to miscarriage/s or stillbirths in that interim period. Without modern contraception, offspring generally came quite quickly after (and sometimes even before), marriage. Fertility was seemingly not an issue given the number of subsequent births (in both histories). The new version goes somewhat to solving this with the record of Alexander in 1782 and Margaret or Mary in 1786. At this point I would speculate that Alexander and Margaret or Mary may not figure in the established McGregor history because as elder siblings, they may have married away from, or left the family environment and were now absent (forgotten?) when the subsequent McGregor generation emigrated to Australia. Another example is the frustrating inability to trace the generations back beyond Gregor and Margaret. This has now been reconciled in the new history.

Some further information has been confirmed from viewing transcriptions of records for "Baptisms in Catholic Congrgegations of Braemar & Glengairn, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. 1781 - 1845"
